Get all the information you need to build using earth!
Compressed Earth Block (CEB) is the focus.
We'll cover the basics of building construction using six well-established methods:
- Adobe
- Rammed Earth
- Compressed Earth Block
- Earthbag
- Cob
- Straw Bale
We then focus on Compressed Earth Block in great detail.
NOTE: We follow the New Mexico Code for Rammed Earth, Adobe, and CEB construction.
TOPICS INCLUDED:
- Soil: Types, soil tests, mining soil, mixing soil, moisture content, stabilizing soil, etc.
- Presses and other equipment: Types of presses, how they work, cost, number of people required, tools, etc.
- Making blocks: Determining best soil mix, optimal pressure, correct moisture content, curing, and testing.
- Foundation: Types, advantages of each, how to build them, stem walls, etc.
- Laying blocks: Story poles, mason's lines, making slurry or slip, bond patterns, cutting blocks.
- Doors/Windows: Installing lintels, door bucks, and window bucks.
- Utilities: Different methods for installing electric and plumbing.
- Bond beam: Methods for "tying it all together" at the top of the walls.
- Arches, Vaults, and Domes: Building arches for windows or entryways, building vaulted ceilings and domes.
- Plaster / Stucco and Paint: Protecting the exterior and interior walls.

BUILDING TOGETHER WITH EARTH Working with earth is fun and rewarding. This is a completely hands-on workshop all the way through. Bring hats, gloves, good work shoes, sunblock, repellant, water, and come prepared to get your hands dirty! This workshop will fully prepare anyone to build using compressed earth block.
Recommended: Prior classroom/online Natural Building Seminar.
WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Weekend I Making Blocks
Introduction, mining soil, testing soil, soil mixtures, calculating and using stabilizer, moisture levels, calculating blocks needed, operating press, testing blocks, block production, stacking blocks, covering and curing blocks.
Weekend II Foundation
Setting up batter boards, using masons line, finish digging trench, laying filter fabric, pouring and tamping first layer of gravel, assembling and laying drain pipe, calculating slope, continue pouring gravel and tamping, reset masons lines, create bond beam framing, cut tie and place rebar, finish formwork, prepare for concrete pour.
Weekend III Constructing Walls part 1
Site preparation, sealing grade beam, setting up story poles, using water levels, setting course markings, making door and window bucks, making slurry, cutting blocks, installing door bucks, using mortar versus slurry, using masons lines, laying first course with mortar, laying blocks, making head and bed joints, using slurry, leveling blocks, making straight and level courses. We will also build at least one window arch in a wall.
Weekend IV Constructing Walls part 2
Installing window bucks, cutting channels in blocks, methods for installing electric, methods for varying course heights, laying blocks alongside bucks, correcting mistakes, installing lintels, hanging cabinetry, using scaffolding, building multiple rooms, finish last course.
Weekend V Bond Beam and Plastering Walls
Using concrete versus wood for bond beam, attaching different types of roofs, installing wood formwork for concrete bond beam, prepare cut tie and place rebar, finish formwork as needed. Using hardware cloth, mixing and applying earthen plaster, finish course with completion certificates.
